-Where did they come from? Asia through the Land Bridge
-What advantages did the Europeans have? Why were they more advanced? GUNS, GERMS, and STEEL- natural resources and animals, led to villages, led to more specific jobs (like blacksmiths, bakers, etc), led to more time for people to experiment with new technology, led to more technology.
-Major civilizations- Incas, Aztecs, Maya (in South), smaller “nations” like the Iroquois in the North.
-Had systems of religions, trade, government, and distinct cultures. Why Explore?
-European economy starting to be based on trade- TRADE: exchange of goods and ideas *Why is Trade necessary for a growing civilization?
*Europeans want to find faster, better route to Asia
-Whomever has the most money= most powerful nation.
-Columbus proposing to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to sail through ocean to Asia- why he called them “Indians” Columbus
-August 1492, Columbus set off with 3 ships and 90 sailorsà Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria
-month passed without sight of land…crew was going to mutiny- Columbus made them a promise that if they didn’t see land within three days he would turn around…on third day, boy saw flock of birds…knew land was nearby.
-Landed in West Indies, convinced it was India. Explored for three months. Met “Indians” and saw the gold that they possessed…demanded more and brought it back to Spain.
-treatment of the Indians- very poor. Enslaved them and forced them to find him gold. *Will become the norm for Spanish Conquistadors
